Browser wars is a metaphorical term that refers to competitions for dominance in usage share in the web browser marketplace. The term is often used to denote two specific rivalries: the competition that saw Microsoft's Internet Explorer replace Netscape's Navigator as the dominant browser during the late 1990s and the erosion of Internet Explorer's market share since 2003 by a collection of emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera.

Browser Wars: Safari vs. Mozzila FireFox?
Q. I am buying a new laptop and wondering which browser I should choose as my default. Mozzila FireFox or Safari. (I dont like Internet Explorer)

A. My experience: depends on yer laptop and yer situation. If you're getting a MacOSX system, and will use ONLY MacOSX, use Safari. On MacOSX, Safari starts up and runs quite a bit faster than Firefox. If you have JUST Windows, use Firefox. It's quite a bit faster than Safari on Windows. If you have two computers, one MacOSX and one Windows, and you don't want to have to learn two different browsers, then I'd say, the choice is Firefox. And if you like all those add-ons, the pick of the litter is Firefox. We have two Windows boxes. I spend most of my time on the MacOSX box and use Safari most (but not all) the time there. Mi esposa spends her time on the Windows boxes (with me on there now and then to diddle and do maintenance for her).… [cont.]

The browser wars - who's winning it?
Q. Which is the best browser currently available? Mozilla Firefox seems to have the edge on the rest but is this true? Your thoughts please!

A. I'd certainly agree with your statement - Firefox is sooo much more secure and a lot quicker. Sadly MS have such a stranglehold on the market, IE is going to be around for a long long time, along with all its bugs etc etc!

Why are browser wars so important?
Q. I don't think any of the top browsers cost anything, nor do they get any money from advertisements. If I were allowed to install Google Chrome on an Apple iPhone, I would still be tethered to AT&T for access to the Internet, and Apple still sold me the iPhone. I can understand that the big companies want to control every aspect of a user's experience (and provide them with a complete solution). However, where do companies like Mozilla and Opera get their income and what would happen if one of the bigger companies lost a lot of their market share, other than loss of control?
