FrenchNounchampions
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A champion (identical to the French, from the late Latin campio) is the victor in a challenge, contest or competition. In sports, a champion is the athlete or team in first place at the end of a season of organized competition (and, if applicable, any associated playoffs). It is for this reason that such competitions are often called championships. There can be a territorial pyramid of championships, e.g. local, regional / provincial, state, national, continental and world championships, and even further (artificial) divisions at one or more of these levels, as in soccer. Their champions can be accordingly styled, e.g. national champion, world champion. In certain disciplines, there are specific titles for champions, either descriptive, as the baspehlivan in Turkish oil wrestling, yokozuna in Japanese sumo wrestling; or copied from real life, such as the koenig and keizer ('king' and 'emperor') in traditional archery competitions (not just national, also at lower levels) in the Low Countries.
The original meaning of the word partakes of both these senses: in the Feudal Era, knights were expected to be champions of both prowess in combat and of causes, the latter most commonly being either patriotic, romantic or religious in nature. This reaches its most literal in a trial by combat, in which each combatant champions the cause of one side of the trial. From Wikipedia under the

Q. People say that it is the same tournament it just had its name changed but i disagree i think it is a completely different tournament but i don't know for sure. So far i think the differences are the champions league now is worth more money than the old european cup, more teams are entered into the champions league now, away goals rule was introduced and im not sure but is the champions league trophy now (old big ears) the same trophy they used to lift in the european cup? Am I right or wrong because i have been arguing about this for days with my friend! Asked by Ally Boyce - Wed Dec 10 05:17:37 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. European Cup was contested between the Champions of all European leagues (and the holders of the cup), in a strict knockout format (home and away games). Fantastic competition Champions' League has the top 4 of the major leagues, and no representation from the smaller nations - using a group format to a) ensure the big clubs go through - even if they get a couple of bad results and b) get more money !!! Boring and predictable competition. Answered by dumberthangeorgebush - Wed Dec 10 06:41:15 2008 How much will the champions league winner will earn? Q. Q. I think that Platini made a new rule that soon only the top 3 of each country can qualify, but when does this start? For example, if a team finishes in 4th this year, will they be able to qualify for the Champions League? Just want to know, because if Arsenal get 4th, I wanna make sure they can qualify for next year? Asked by lochheart - Fri Feb 20 22:17:55 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. the 4th place team in the English Premier League this season will still qualify for the UEFA Champions' League but they have to play in the qualifying round to qualify for the group stage. the top three teams from the English Premier League will play in the group stage of the UEFA Champions' League next season.
