Competition is a contest between individuals, groups, nations, animals, etc. for territory, a niche, or a location of resources. It arises whenever two or more parties strive for a goal which cannot be shared. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which co-exist in the same environment. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates, etc. Humans compete for water, food, and mates, though when these needs are met deep rivalries often arise over the pursuit of wealth, prestige, and fame. Business is often associated with competition as most companies are in competition with at least one other firm over the same group of customers. www.entrybox.co.nz is New Zealands home of competitions :)

Sizes and levels

Competition may also exist at different sizes; some competitions may be between two members of a species, while other competitions can involve entire species. In an example in economics, a competition between two small stores would be considered small compared to competition between several mega-giants. As a result, the consequences of the competition would also vary- the larger the competition, the larger the effect.

In addition, the level of competition can also vary. At some levels, competition can be informal; more for pride and/or fun. However, other competitions can be extremely serious; for example, some human wars have erupted because of the intense competition between two nations.

Whats the difference between an SQ and SPL competition?
Q. I always hear people talking about "SQ" and "SPL" and different competitions based around each, and I know that SPL stands for sound pressure level, which is basically just how loud the noise is, but whats SQ? Im guessing its like sound quality... And if it is, then how do they measure that in a competition? How does an SQ comp work? And whats the difference between an SQ and SPL competition?

A. As a student, you will find it useful to look up in textbooks or on the net "Porter's Five Forces". prof. Porter outlined five forces that act upon a market so as a student you will score well if you write a paragraph on each force. Very briefly, the forces are: 1. Threat of Substitute Products or services 2. Threat of New Entrants into the market (Called Barriers to Entry) 3. Power of Suppliers to influence prices paid for supplies to a company. 4. Power of Buyers to push prices downwards 5. The degree of competitive rivalry in the market between competing firms. The websites below will give you a good idea of the effects of each. Good luck with the assignment.
