A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile phone to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.

How do I network computers in two rooms wirelessly but still use ethernet cables going into all the actual PCs?
Q. I currently have one office with a wired network and am about to get a second office room across the hall. But I'm not allowed to drill holes. How can I hook up computers in the new room to join in the existing wired network we have and access our file server without running a cable across the hallway (and still use wired computers in the new room)?

A. Set up a 'Wireless router' like the Linksys WRT-54G in the 'wired office. Get another one or an Access Point and put that in the 'un-wired' office. You can then use a wire to that router or access point and have it broadcast to the other one and to the internet. Use the strongest encryption that the routers and devices can support.

How do I add more computers to a wireless network?
Q. I have recently moved home to my parents, and can no longer connect to their wireless network. There is a box saying 'attempting to connect' or something, and then I get an error message. I think the problem might be that my sister has got a laptop since I have been away, and so there are currently 4 computers connected to the network. I heard that some networks automatically set a limit of 4 client PCs, so how do I increase this? I think I read something about logging into a router, but cant remember anything more. Incidentally, the wireless box is not physically connected to any of the computers. Hope you guys can help, thanks!

A. your wireless card should scan for a network to connect to you should be able to connect to it then. Find your internet connection and click on it, see what options you have. If you want to clear the list of computers in the DHCP list, which is the deal that automatically gives out ip addresses, just, restart the router that should do it. Then try to connect again. If the number is limited to 4 and your sis ain't around right now, you can take her spot.

What is a good wired internet service for three computers in the Bronx?
Q. Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any good wired internet service suggestions for someone living in the Bronx, NY. I have three computers, but I am looking to atleast give one more of my computers a wired connection. I currently have the linksy to connect the two other computers for a wireless connection with my main computer, but it stinks, often dropping the signal, resulting in the other two running slowly. Any ideas?

A. Try Broadband Reports. Both Optimum Online and Verzion DSL are available there and seem to have about the same reviews. However, Optimum Online will probably be faster, and Verizon has notoriously bad customer support.

A computer is a machine for manipulating data according to a list of instructions. Computers take many forms, from early room-sized complexes to modern personal computers (PCs) and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to tiny embedded systems that add sophisticated capabilities to other devices like toys and appliances.
